Paeonies / Peonies

Whichever way you spell it, these are gorgeous flowers. A highlight of springtime in any garden

And they also look good in black and white

Spring flowers

That time of year when everything bursts into life and there are flowers and bright colours everywhere

Blossom time

My favourite thing about Spring is watching the blossoms come out on the fruit trees. Beautiful in their own right but also a promise of things to come.

How to crochet a simple flower

IMG_4526

I’ve been experimenting with crocheted flowers recently, as I have a couple of keen crochet students who are interested in making flowers. it’s also a good way to use up small amounts of leftover yarn. Here’s a design I came up with. You can use any yarn and any size hook – thicker or thinner yarn and hooks will give a different size flower.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

tr – treble crochet stitch

scr – single crochet stitch

dcr – double crochet stitch

Instructions:

Make a slipknot and ch 6.

Join to make a circle.

Ch 7 (counts as first tr and ch3)

(tr, ch3) 7 times into the circle, join to 4th ch of beginning chain.

(3scr, 2dcr, 3scr) Into each ch3 space around.

Fasten off

Congratulations! You have now crocheted your flower.

KoŇ°ice’s botanic gardens

IMG_3162

The botanic gardens are a little way outside the city centre, but easily accessible by bus – although when you get off the bus you have to look hard to see the signs. I spent a happy afternoon there wandering among the plants and trees. I was particularly impressed by their collection of chilli plants – who knew there were black chillis! A small herd of goats – and one sheep – were wandering around chewing everything they could get close enough to, and they added a certain charm, as did some chickens. Very good value for just 2 Euros admission fee – and 1 Euro extra for a pass to take photos.
