The cruel shark show is in town

on May 18, 2015

The Zive Zraloky (live shark) show has, unfortunately, arrived in Pieštany. I walked past this morning to take some photos. They weren’t doing much business but I imagine things will pick up later when the kids get out of school. As I looked at the truck all I could think was how small it seemed for 4 adult sharks. Someone inside the truck seemed to be banging on the tanks – presumably to encourage the sharks to move more and put on a show. I feel ashamed to live in a town where events like this are permitted. Just walking past this truck made me want to cry.

If you would like to object to this event being held in Piešt’any please sign my petition to the mayor asking him to ban it. The petition is here.

It must be hellish for these poor creatures to live like this – shunted around from place to place and then tortured with the banging – all so that the person who allegedly “rescued” them from the Gulf of Mexico – can make money by exploiting them.

This operation seems to be shady, to say the least. The company is registered in a town called Levice, and the registered address is a block of flats – not prime shark territory. They don’t have a website or contact telephone number and seem to only advertise their appearance in towns at the last minute – presumably to avoid coming to the attention of animal rights protesters. In addition to touring Slovakia they have also been to Poland and Romania. There’s a logo on their van saying SOS More (SOS Seas) but I can’t find an organisation with this name via Google.

I would be interested to know how these sharks came from the Gulf of Mexico – if indeed, they did come from there – to Slovakia, and how the owners of this show obtain licensing from the various countries in which they seem to operate. If anyone has information about this please let me know.

Please, please don’t visit this or any similar event. It must be horrendously stressful for the animals involved and as a result they will have sad, short lives. Your children do not have a right to see sharks – they don’t exist for the benefit of humans. They belong in the ocean where they can play their part in maintaining the ecosystem and ensuring the health of the oceans – the producers of 80% of the oxygen we breathe. As Paul Watson so often says – if the oceans die, we die.

Well done for documenting this. I will share on social media and provide a translation in Slovak as well.
