Order No Rainbows

Life as an expat, Photography, Crafts, Vegan Food, Music, Art, Animals…..

Apart from a few nice buildings this town has nothing whatsoever to recommend it. Currently number 1 in the list of Slovak towns I have visited and never wish to visit again. These fish decorations on a random house were the best thing about the place

I also noted people engaged in the bizarre Slovak tradition of going to church and standing outside while the mass is on. I have noted this in several places now and cannot understand what it’s about. The churches are not full to overflowing, there appears to be room for everyone, but I’ve seen people just walk up to the church and then stand there, without even looking inside. I could understand if it involved people with crying babies who didn’t want to disrupt the congregation, but it doesn’t. It seems to involve people of all genders and ages. Come on people, if you’re going to go to church, then go in the church. Standing outside when a mass is on does not really count as going to mass, does it? Either go to church or don’t go at all, but this half-assed halfway nonsense isn’t fooling anyone. I’m not remotely religious – I gave up going to church years ago. So I’m probably not well-placed to judge people’s intentions. But in a country where virtually everyone claims to be religious, and to go to church regularly, this just seems strange.

Topoľčany also has the most depressing bus station ever.
