Vegan Feast in Bratislava

on September 17, 2014

This year’s Vegánske Hody Bratislava was held on 6 September. The event was held in the gardens of the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, but I don’t think the President popped round to join us! When I left home to go to Bratislava it was cold ad rainy, so I didn’t hold out a lot of hope for the day, but shortly after I arrived the sun came out and it turned into a great sunny day.

There were lots of stalls offering food and vegan products, from around Slovakia and also from the Czech Republic. I sampled a lot of what was on offer, and was particularly impressed by the Bounty Cake from Frangipani Vitality Bar. Dark chocolate with a coconut centre, served very cold. It was even better than the Bounty bars I used to eat before I became vegan!

As well as the food stalls there were some stalls from NGOs, and there were a lot of speakers during the day – including me, talking about my experience as a volunteer for Sea Shepherd Operation Grindstop 2014 in the Faroe Islands. The best talk of the day was by veteran animal rights activist Martin Balluch from VGT Austria, who gave a very interesting talk – in English – about his experiences.

I met lots of new people, which was really nice, as I often feel very isolated in Piešt’any, where most people don’t understand what being vegan is, and where restaurants think that offering a vegetarian option – which is usually fried cheese – is a radical thing to do – they certainly don’t cater to vegans. But now I know that there are some good vegan/vegetarian restaurants in Bratislava, so eating out occasionally might just be an option. I was also impressed by the tofu socks worn by Matt, one of the organisers

Planning for next year’s Vegánske Hody is already underway – I hope to be there again. Here are some photos I took during the day.
