The long road home

on July 14, 2014

Yesterday was my last day on campaign. It’s been a whirlwind two weeks. I’ve learned a lot, seen this beautiful part of the world, met some amazing people and had lots of interesting experiences. But the best thing for me was to be able to do something to protect whales and dolphins. I’m so glad I plucked up the courage to apply for and come on campaign, and I’m hugely grateful to Sea Shepherd for letting someone with no previous direct action experience be part of this amazing operation. Hopefully this will have been the first of many campaigns. It’s been really hard to leave my amazing team, and part of me feels very guilty that I could only do this for 2 weeks and have to leave with so much time left before the campaign is completed. But I have total confidence in my colleagues, and in the new volunteers who arriving to replace those of us who have to go. We’re a diverse bunch – all ages, shapes and sizes, from different backgrounds and with different skills and experiences. But what unites us is our passion for the oceans and the beings who live there, and our commitment to challenging and ending cruelty in all its forms.

The Faroe Islands is an amazing place – incredible scenery, whatever the weather, amazing opportunities to see wildlife in its natural habitat, and potential for all sorts of travel and sporting activities. I wish the people would turn away from the outdated, barbaric practice that is the Grindadrap (whale murder) and promote the positive aspects of their culture and environment instead. The Faroese people who stopped to talk to me were, on the whole, polite and courteous, and curious about why people from other countries wanted to come to their countries and challenge their traditions. The answer is that the oceans belong to all of us, and we need to preserve them and their inhabitants. 80% of our oxygen comes from the ocean so, as Captain Paul Watson has said so often “If the oceans die, we die”. What better reason could there be for us to be there?

Here are some images from my last day in Klaksvik:

An oblivious walker – she had headphones on and didn’t realise we were behind her. After 3 minutes or so she turned and got the shock of her life!

A friendly pup

A long and winding road

And one last trip through the disco tunnel – which now has it’s own song, courtesy of my team mate Nils. “Na na na na na na na na Disco. Na na na na na na na na Tunnel. Disco.Tunnel. Disco. Tunnel. Na na na na na na na na Disco Tunnel” Sadly no recording of this song exists, but the memory will linger. I’m really going to miss Team Klaksvik!

At the airport this morning they had keyrings with cuddly pilot whales for sale…
