Bird Shepherds!

on July 10, 2014

Tuesday was another busy day. But we took some time out in the morning to admire the goslings

The geese and ducks were living in an enclosure covered by some green netting, and as we were admiring the goslings, and being hissed at by their parents, we noticed that a starling, in search of a free meal, had become entangled in the netting. We spent several minutes getting him free and trying to remove the netting. He flew off before we were quite finished but seemed to be unhindered by the remaining strands of net around his legs. And then we rescued another bird in exactly the same situation.

This turned out to be just the beginning of a day of bird rescues. While driving around we found an oyster catcher in the middle of the road. Usually they fly off when cars approach, so when this one didn’t we knew that there was a problem. We shooed it carefully towards the side of the road, where we established that nothing seemed to be broken – the bird was just disoriented and seemed to have trouble walking straight. We thought he had possibly been almost hit by a car and was shocked. A few minutes later he seemed to have recovered, and was walking around the field with no apparent problems.

Later, back at the house, we found yet another starling entangled in the netting. We freed him, and this time managed to get a couple of photos

Later, I had to shoo a naughty gosling back through the fence after it managed to escape – twice. I was rewarded for my efforts with a particularly malevolent hissing from the father goose. Ungrateful bird!
