Disco lights in the Klaksvik tunnel

on July 1, 2014

Today was my first full day on campaign here in the Faroe Islands. This place is gorgeous – the scenery looks like it was designed for Game of Thrones or a similar fantasy series.

Getting around the Faroes is pretty straightforward – the road system is good in most places, and getting from one island to another, or around the mountains is made easier by a system of bridges and tunnels. The one-way tunnels are a bit unnerving, to say the least. Strangest of all though is the tunnel with the disco lights about halfway through. The tunnel starts off like any other for around the first minute, and then suddenly and for no apparent reason, there are red, blue and green lights. This lasts for around another 30 seconds before the tunnel reverts to its normal status. I’m not sure why the coloured lights exist but they have added a certain note of comedy to the daily routine. Some of my colleagues have been known to insist on the occupants of their car singing when they reach the disco section, but this was not required today, so I contented myself with taking some photos of the tunnel as we passed through.

Today I also had my first encounters with the Faroese people. The folks in the supermarket (both staff and customers) were polite and friendly, and happy to respond to my cheerful “good morning”. However it appears that not everyone is thrilled that Sea Shepherd are in the area, judging by the interesting hand gestures demonstrated by some of the younger local residents…

And today there was another delicious vegan dinner, prepared by Nils from Germany.
