Someone shot Lulu!

on April 21, 2014

Someone shot my cat. With an air rifle. While she was playing on the balcony. I thought she had jumped off or fallen from the balcony, which has happened once before (thankfully that time she was uninjured). So when I noticed that she wasn’t putting weight on one leg I thought she had broken it in the fall. Which meant that I was stunned when the vet told me she had been shot and showed me the x-ray showing where the pellet had lodged in her stomach (which will require an operation to remove), and another hole in her broken leg.

I am absolutely stunned that someone could do this, not just because clearly anyone who does stuff like this is a total f**king psycho, but also because I live in a second floor flat and stuff on the balcony is not easily visible from the street. Which means that it had to be someone in the flats across the street with a view of my balcony. Thank you psycho neighbour! Like my already one-eyed cat hasn’t already had enough to deal with in her short life.

Poor Lulu now has one leg heavily bandaged and at first she couldn’t can’t work out how to walk. However the sound of a tin of cat food being opened led to her suddenly getting it all figured out and she’s got the hang of moving around now. But she’s very sleepy and its obviously been a huge shock.

The vets at Zverland veterinary clinic in Piešt’any were great (they always are) – one of them came in specially to treat her, which bowled me over.

I’m in shock about the whole thing (not to mention the vet’s bills, today and to come). The vet said it wouldn’t really be worth reporting it to the police because under Slovak law animals are just “things”. So I didn’t, and I hope the shooter doesn’t upgrade to taking potshots at human targets. I’m donned a helmet, took a deep breath, took the stuff off the balcony and piled it up in the loving room in front of the windows just in case. Very thankful I’m moving out of here next weekend… Up to now, Piešt’any has felt like a very safe place to live so i hope this is a one-off incident.
