Hey lady!

on April 6, 2014

It’s not usually a good sign when someone shouts this at me, but this time was an exception. I was walking towards a subway in Trencin, this was, unfortunately the only way to cross the road. I had my camera around my neck and was a bit apprehensive as these guys were heading the same way. Particularly as there was clearly a football match in town and there were lots of police decked out in riot gear on the train, at the station and around the town. but the conversation went as follows:

Large shaven-headed guy: Ahoj Pani (hey lady!)

Me: Ne hovorim po Slovensky (I don’t speak Slovak)

Him: (in English) Are you going to take our photo?

Me: Erm, would you like me to take your photo?

Them: Yes!

Me: Ok then (taking photo) Are you going to the match? Which team do you support (pretending I hadn’t noticed the Bratislava scarves around their necks)

Them: Slovan Bratislava. We’re Ultra-fans. And we’re football hooligans

Me: Really, you don’t look like hooligans

Them: Yes, we’re the worst hooligans. And we hate the police

Me: Erm, ok then. Enjoy the match, hope your team win

Them: Thanks, have a good day

And then they wandered off in search of a pub. Despite the large number of police in the town all the fans seemed to do was have a drink and go to the match. The singing and cheering could be heard at the other end of the town but there was no sign of any hooliganism or violence, thankfully. So here they are – the best behaved (possibly) football hooligans in Slovakia. I cannot imagine having had this conversation in the UK. And just for the record, Slovan Bratislava won 1:0. (Note the inevitable two-fingered peace sign – this happens a lot when a group of Slovaks are photographed. I don’t know why. Maybe they all secretly want to be Japanese teenagers)
