Is there no limit to people’s greed and brutality? 250 dolphins trapped in Taiji’s killing cove

on January 19, 2014

There are currently around 250 dolphins trapped in the killing cove in Taiji, Japan. Some, including a rare albino baby dolphin have already been selected for a miserable life in captivity – the others, who are not “lucky” enough to be selected, will be brutally slaughtered and sold for meat. The waters of the cove will run red once again as the dolphins watch their families being slaughtered and wait for their own turn at the hands of the brutal butchers. There is a report about what is happening on the Sea Shepherd website. People try to justify the capture and slaughter, claiming it is “tradition” but it is not tradition – it is part of a commercial business and the only reason for continuing it is money. Cold hard cash.

This story is getting a lot of press coverage including stories by the Seattle PI, New Zealand Herald, The Independent and The Guardian.

If you want to know what you can do to help stop the horrifying capture and slaughter of these beautiful creatures please visit the Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians website which has an extensive list of embassies and organisations to contact. You can follow the story via the Cove Guardians Facebook Page and the various other Sea Shepherd Facebook pages such as the Sea Shepherd Global page, and the Facebook pages for other organisations involved in this issue, such as Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project.

The history of the Cove has been brilliantly documented in the Oscar winning film directed by Louie Psihoyos. I can guarantee that watching this film will make you want to do something to stop what happens in Taiji. Please don’t visit places such as Sea World or other aquariums or marine parks that use captive whales and dolphins – by lining their pockets you are contributing to the continuation of the bloody business at Taiji.
