Order No Rainbows

Life as an expat, Photography, Crafts, Vegan Food, Music, Art, Animals…..

Whenever I visit a new place I find myself drawn to the graveyard. It’s always interesting to see how people remember their loved ones, look at the different names on the graves, see if and how the graves are tended and decorated. It took me a while to check out the graveyard in Piešt’any – I’ve been here since the end of August and finally got there on Christmas Eve – but it didn’t disappoint. It helped that it was one of those cold days with weak sunlight which made the graveyard very atmospheric.

I liked the way this guy’s family had placed a little Christmas tree on his grave

And this Jozef Petrus was celebrating Christmas with a Santa candle and snowy house

There were a number of undated graves which just gave the person’s name and the word “soldier” – not sure when they were from or why there were no dates on the simple crosses which adorned the graves.

Occasionally there were clues as to what someone’s profession had been

The upside down pigeon next to the upright one on these and some other graves baffled me

There is more information about Piešt’any’s graveyards on the Piešt’any Information Centre website
