Yesterday’s bizarre menu item

Yes, you read that right. Baked apple stuffed woodpecker. Why would anyone eat woodpecker? Is it some kind of local delicacy? And why is it on a dessert menu? I’m baffled. I’ve been wondering if they confused “woodpecker” with some other word, or if it’s a local word for something but I’m coming up empty.

Anyone got any ideas which might help to solve this mystery? If you do, please leave a comment 🙂

13/12 – Update – a friend has advised that it may be a mistranslation – maybe they were looking for translation of DATLE (dates) and misspelled it DATEL (woodpecker). So no woodpeckers may have been harmed in the making of what really is a dessert. Thanks Lucia!

  1. This sounds like something Ruber would cook up. Always trying to do his good ole’ daddy in you know. When you find out pleeease let this professor know. It’s quite unnerving indeed don’t you think?
