Christmas is coming

on December 1, 2013

Christmas is just a few weeks away which means that Christmas markets are appearing all around Slovakia. The market in Piestany opened in Freedom Square on Friday and although small, it has been attracting lots of visitors. The market has the usual mix of hot wine, punch, and food (sadly mostly meat-based), although there are some stalls selling handmade goods. One good feature of the market is that from Thursday to Sunday each week there is music, so the market becomes an after-work social destination. The Spa Island has also been decorated with festive lights, a large Christmas tree and the fountain, now drained for winter, has been transformed into a large Advent wreath. The market in Bratislava has also opened and is on a large scale, with the addition of an ice-rink, which was very popular with small kids and their Dads yesterday morning. There was a greater variety of goods for sale, and a large variety of hot alcoholic drinks – which were already popular at 11am! I tried some hot Chardonnay – not something I ever want to drink again – I think white wine is best enjoyed cold. I guess it’s just a matter of taste…
