Indian Sumer in Levoca

on October 10, 2013

Last weekend I attended the Indian Summer in Levoca festival of classical music along with my colleague Robin. I hadn’t been to a classical music festival before but was very impressed, both by the music that was played, but also by the hospitality and readily shared knowledge of the main organisers, David and Nadia Conway, a british couple who have a beautiful home in Levoca. Although unfamiliar with many of the composers and musicians included in the festival I was very impressed. I particularly enjoyed the concert by Jozef Luptak (cello) and Boris Lenko (accordion), yes, really, cello and accordion together. They performed separately and together. Jozef’s Prayer for solo cello from Bloch’s “Jewish Life” suite and his own “Song without words”, both dedicated to his late father, were really moving. And their combined performance of Liebertango by Astor Piazzola was fantastic! Other highlights on the days I attended included the Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra, Kosice, performing Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, the Kapralova Quartet performing Alkan’s quartet fragment and 3 motifs, and Sylvie Bodorova’s Quartet No 4 “Shofarot”. I would thoroughly recommend this festival, and the town of Levoca, to anyone thinking of travelling to this beautiful part of the world.
