Blansko from A to Z. X is for….

on June 8, 2013

Xenophobia. One of the things I find really unattractive about living in this country is having to listen to derogatory comments about foreigners on an almost daily basis. The major ethnic groups here are Gypsies/Roma and Vietnamese. While the Vietnamese are grudgingly tolerated, the Roma are almost universally detested, with no-one seeming to have a good thing to say about them. My experience of dealing with Roma here has been very limited – they’re around, but to me they’re not particularly easy to distinguish visually from other Czech people. However when I’ve pointed this out to people the reaction has been horrified. Roma are referred to as “black people” but they don’t look particularly black to me. But then again neither do a lot of other “black” people… Isn’t it time for all of us to move away from such absurd labelling and deal with each other as individuals?

X is also for Xyla, a local kitchen manufacturer. I can’t comment on the quality of their product but I’m glad they exist, as otherwise I’d be really stuck for a photo to add to this post.
