Blansko from A to Z. I is for…

on May 19, 2013

Industry. Blansko has a long history as an industrial town, being originally a centre for the wool trade and then for the cast iron industry. This accounts for the many cast iron statues around town and on display at the local castle.

These days a lot of the old factories have been closed down, and there are a lot of gloomy empty buildings in the area. These days the focus is more on light industry – electronics and pharmaceuticals, and timber is also important – Blansko station always seems to have at least one train being filled with huge logs on the tracks.

I is also for ice-cream, the sweet treat of choice for locals. It’s not uncommon to see families wandering around all enjoying an ice-cream. There’s a place at the edge of town which sells freshly-made sheeps milk ice-cream. I’ve always feel sorry for the poor sheep there which was living alone in a small space, but recently they’ve found it a companion, which is nice.
