Blansko from A to Z. C is for…

on May 15, 2013

Cars. There are, naturally, a lot of cars in Blansko and the local drivers could be described as reckless, at best. Regard for their own and anyone else’s safety doesn’t seem to exist and it’s not unusual to see a car tearing round a sharp corner, almost on two wheels, or going at speed along a residential street. I used to find speed bumps annoying when I lived in the UK but they’re badly needed here.

Most people in Blansko seem to drive a Skoda, and there is a lot of pride in it being a Czech brand, even though it’s now apparently owned by Volkswagen. A Skoda Octavia seems to be the vehicle of choice for business managers – anything more luxurious, like a Mercedes, is seen as ostentatious, and the Czechs don’t really do ostentatious.

There are also a lot of old cars on the roads, some in better condition than others, and the occasional vintage car in good condition can also be seen. Here’s a car I saw recently which caught my eye – it’s a Wartburg, a car which was made in the former East Germany and which retains some popularity, with owners clubs and car rallies being held in various places.

And this is what seems to be the local VW Beetle graveyard/shrine
