Czech people think foreigners pose a health risk and spread disease

on April 24, 2013

This is according to an article in the Prague Monitor which can be read here. Apparently we also raise unemployment and the crime rate.

Gee thanks Czech people. It’s a real pleasure to live in a country where I and other foreigners are viewed so positively. Kind of explains the distinct lack of warmth and friendliness…

I’d love to see a follow-up report in which they ask foreigners living here what they think of the Czech people.

Yes, well that’s the Prague Monitor for you. As English speaking news sources in the Czech Republic go, it’s not the most respected or objective.

I’ve been living the the Czech Republic for nearly ten years and in my experience the “xenophobia” of the Czechs has been largely overstated and you’re unlikely to see much of it unless you go to really rural areas.

For objective and decent English speaking news from the Czech Republic, Radio Praha is your best bet:

    • Lucky you! I live in a small town where people don’t know any foreigners, don’t want to know any and treat non-Czechs with a high degree of contempt – although strangely they do want to learn English. The article may not be objective, but then neither is my experience.

I think what you’re running into is not specific to Czechs but could happen in small towns anywhere in the world.

People in some of the small towns in my home province in Canada are suspicious of any outsiders, even those of their own nationality.

Typical insular small town mentality, not really unique to the Czechs.

Where in the republic do you live, if I might ask?

      • I live in Blansko.
