A funny thing happened on the way through the graveyard…

on November 3, 2012

While we were wandering around Brno’s main cemetery taking photos, we noticed a policeman standing next to a grave with a well-dressed elderly gentleman. As we drew closer we noticed that there was a blue blanket on the ground, and a foot could be seen protruding from it. The policeman kept looking nervously at us, so we moved past and stopped a little further up to discuss whether it was a dead body or if the person was still alive. On the basis that the guys eyes seemed to be opening and shutting, and some movement was discernible, we decided that the person was alive, but we were somewhat curious as to how they came to be lying on a grave. One of my companions was hissing “take a photo, take a photo” at me, but I was afraid the policeman would notice me and I would be arrested or have my camera confiscated. So I took a furtive photo from a distance before moving even further away:

But was that enough for some people? Oh no! So one of them briskly trotted down the adjacent alley of graves and took a paparazzi-style photo over the hedge

Naturally, we waited around to see what happened next. Another police car and an ambulance arrived, the blanket was jerked off the body and the person was rudely dragged upright and manhandled into the ambulance. Our expert’s verdict was that he was drunk and passed out on the grave, and would probably be hauled off to the hospital for a check up.

As graveyard experiences go, it was hilarious. The kind of thing you couldn’t make up if you tried…
