Random wildlife moment

on October 25, 2012

I was coming back from Boskovice to Blansko on the bus today when I saw a large birds’s head poking through a hedge. “Bloody heck, these Czech turkeys are huge” was going through my mind when the bird raised its head and joined two companions – I realised suddenly that these were not actually turkeys, but ostriches. You could have knocked me down with a feather. Literally. I knew that there was a trend a few years back for ostriches to be raised for their meat, but I didn’t realise that this had extended all the way to the Czech Republic, and certainly not to the part of the road between Dobravice and Rajec-Jestrebi, which is very rural. I wanted to ask the other people on the bus whether they’d seen them too, but as I couldn’t speak Czech this wasn’t an option. Sadly, as the bus was moving I didn’t get a photo, but I’m going back for evidence once I work out where the nearest bus stop is. It could be that they aren’t being reared for meat, but I can’t see any other reason for them to be here – it’s not like they would have been flying over the area and thought “this looks nice, lets stay”…

Here’s a photo someone else took of an ostrich, probably not a Czech one.

This country just keeps getting weirder.
