Order No Rainbows

Life as an expat, Photography, Crafts, Vegan Food, Music, Art, Animals…..

Ok, I admit, I don’t like snakes. Until last Saturday I’d never got closer to one than looking through the glass in the zoo, and then having nightmares for a week afterwards. I think it goes with being Irish – there are no snakes in Ireland, they have a bad press, we never have contact with them, so we’re scared of them.

So last Saturday there was an open day at the new, very nice, veterinary clinic near my parents house in Wexford. I went along, lured by the promise of seeing lots of animals. And there were the people with the snakes. So I plucked up the courage to get close enough to take some photos. And then I had to do it. I reached out my hand and touched the albino python. I don’t know what I was expecting, but ewwwww. It wasn’t slimy, just sort of cold and hard, and a bit more muscley on the underside. The snake was completely indifferent to being touched.

Having touched the snake I had no desire to actually hold one, and I couldn’t wait to wash my hands when I got back home. But I feel I’ve overcome my fear to some extent. I’ll never understand why people keep them as pets, but I feel less uncomfortable in the presence of snakes than I used to. But I’ll stick to cats and dogs thanks. At least you can cuddle them.
